Grades and Academic Standing

To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must be an undergraduate who earns 12 or more gradable, undergraduate semester credit hours (9 or more hours during summer semester) of UCM credit with a grade point average (GPA) for the semester of 3.50 or above.  Letter grades of P, NC, CR and SC are not graded hours.  There is no Dean's List equivalent for graduate students.

Dean's list designation is indicated on both the official and unofficial academic transcript but does not show on a student's online grade report.

Undergraduate students who have both a cumulative GPA and UCM GPA of at least a 2.00 are considered to be in good academic standing.  A minimum of a 2.00 is required in both of these GPAs to qualify for graduation.  In addition, undergraduate students must maintain a minimum 2.00 in both major and minor required courses.

Some undergraduate majors, minors, and degree programs may require a GPA greater than 2.00 and/or require a grade of C or higher in specific major/minor courses.  Students should refer to their Central Degree audit and Undergraduate Catalog  for particular major, minor, and degree GPA requirements.  Additional questions can be directed to Department Chairs  or Academic Advisors.

What is academic probation?

An undergraduate student whose Central Missouri or cumulative GPA drops below 2.00 will be placed on academic probation.  New freshmen who do not meet regular admissions criteria will be placed on academic probation at the time of admission. A transfer student will be placed on academic probation at the time of admission if his/her cumulative GPA is less than 2.00. 

Students placed on academic probation may continue to enroll in classes.  Students are encouraged to seek advice from their academic advisor about future enrollments.  Undergraduate students on academic probation may not enroll in more than 15 semester hours during any Fall and Spring semester of academic probation. Students who are admitted to the University on probation (both freshmen and transfers) must earn a 2.00 GPA during their first semester at UCM to continue enrollment.

How long will I be on probation?

Undergraduate students on academic probation must earn semester GPAs of at least a 2.00 during each semester of academic probation in order to continue at the university.  When a student on academic probation raises both their Central Missouri GPA and their cumulative GPA to 2.00 or above, the student is removed from probation.

Once on academic probation, if a student earns a semester GPA below 2.00 he/she will be suspended or dismissed (status depends on prior academic standing) from the university. 

Transfer credit will not help to raise the Central Missouri GPA, but will affect the cumulative GPA.  Before repeating coursework at another institution, please read the policies governing course repeats.

How do I get back into good academic standing?

Undergraduate students are considered in good standing when both their Central Missouri GPA and cumulative GPA are at least a 2.00.

What happens if I don't bring my grades up after I am put on probation?

An undergraduate student on academic probation will be suspended or dismissed (status depends on prior academic standing) from Central Missouri at the conclusion of their next semester if their semester GPA is less than 2.00.

How will I be notified if I am placed on academic probation?

If you are placed or continued on academic probation you will be contacted by the University by the Wednesday following finals week, after final grades are available. You will receive an e-mail to your UCM e-mail account from the Registrar鈥檚 Office. A paper letter will not be sent to inform you of your academic standing.

If I have been placed on probation what should I do?

Discuss your upcoming semester with your academic advisor.  It might be a good idea to lighten your academic load to increase the probability that you earn at least a 2.00 semester GPA.  Students on academic probation may not enroll in more than 15 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. You should also explore the possibility of course repeats to help quickly raise your GPA.  UCM offers many free services for academic assistance and free tutoring through the Learning Commons located in the JCK Library.

Your financial aid eligibility may be affected by your academic standing. The Office of Student Financial Services will contact you if there is an issue with your financial aid. Questions regarding financial assistance may be directed to the Office of Student Financial Services at 660-543-8266.

Eligibility for academics and eligibility for financial aid, while connected, are two different things.  A student can be eligible to attend the university but be ineligible for financial aid.  To qualify for financial aid, students must make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).

In addition, changes in 2012 federal financial aid policy allow students to repeat courses that they previously earned a grade of D or higher in only once. Students who repeat such courses for a third (or subsequent) time will not qualify for financial aid for the course and may need to add additional courses to reach 12 qualified credit hours to receive federal financial aid. What is Reinstatement?

The reinstatement of undergraduate students who have been suspended or dismissed from Central Missouri is not automatic or guaranteed.  Petitions will be evaluated by the Success Advising Center with guidance from the academic program of the major requested in the petition. If you are changing majors since your last enrollment, your new major will make the reinstatement decision. Students in the Intensive English Program (IEP) who wish to petition for reinstatement must contact the English Language Center at iep@ucmo.edu. The Registrar's Office does not review reinstatement petitions. Contact the Success Advising Center at 660-543-4721 or success@ucmo.edu if you have questions.

How do I petition for reinstatement?

To petition for reinstatement, students should complete an application for readmission to the University. Then the reinstatement petition will be added to your application checklist and can be accessed through your application status portal MyAdmit. For the best selection of courses, students should submit a petition in March for summer or fall semester reinstatement and in October for spring semester reinstatement. Petitions will be considered through the following deadlines:

 

Fall semester:  July 15th

Spring semester:  November 15th

Summer semester:  April 15th

 

The petition includes a written portion which should include an explanation of the circumstances that led to poor academic performance and an explanation of activities and plans which may lead to improved academic performance in the future. Other substantiating evidence may also be requested. No additional application fee is required. Students must submit transcripts from all colleges attended that are not already on file with UCM, even if classes are in progress. The petition for reinstatement will not be reviewed until all transcripts and an updated application are received by the Admissions office.  After a review of the petition, academic records, and any other substantive evidence available, students will be notified of the reinstatement decision.

Such students may petition for reinstatement as follows:

1. Students who have been suspended may petition for reinstatement after sitting out for one fall or spring semester (summer sessions do not count as a semester for suspension purposes). Students who have been dismissed may petition for reinstatement after one calendar year.

2. A student with documented extenuating circumstances (serious illness, death in the family, etc.) who has been suspended or dismissed may petition for immediate (or early) reinstatement. Petitions for early reinstatement may not be submitted via MyCentral. Students seeking early reinstatement should contact the Dean of their College, or in the case of Open Option students the Director of the Success Advising Center, directly for consideration. Early reinstatement is rarely granted and only applies for extenuating circumstances for which supporting evidence can be provided.
