To teach a child an instrument without first giving [them] preparatory training and without developing singing, reading, and dictating to the highest level along with the playing is to build upon sand.

-Zolt谩n Kod谩ly

The Kod谩ly philosophy

Zolt谩n Kod谩ly (1882-1967) was a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, linguist, author, and music educator. His teachings and writings inspired a revolution in the way that music is taught. Together with colleagues at the Liszt Academy, he developed a philosophy of music that included many new principles. Kod谩ly鈥檚 philosophy included using the best folk and art music from the child鈥檚 own culture to encourage the love of music. Tuneful singing is at the heart of the Kod谩ly philosophy. Music education begins early with the goal of strong music literacy.

Master's degree focus at UCM

This master's degree focus at UCM was designed for the working teacher to complete the Master of Arts in Music in three summers. It is also a way to receive Kod谩ly Certification as graduate credit or continued education credit.

In this three year curriculum, you will attend two weeks of classes on campus at UCM during the month of July for three consecutive summers. This portion will help you achieve Kod谩ly certification and graduate credit.

For those seeking the Master's degree, there are five additional online classes you will need to take. Three of these classes are offered online during the month of June (prior to the July classes on campus) and two are offered during the school year (one each year).
